Almost a quarter of the 39.9 million people living with HIV Worldwide, 9.3 million people are not receiving life-saving treatment. As a result, one person dies every minute from causes related to the disease, according to UNAIDS.

A new report released Monday by a UN agency shows the world is at a “critical” moment that will determine whether world leaders deliver on their commitment to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

In 2023, there were approximately 39.9 million people living with HIV worldwide, of whom 1.3 million were new infections.which is 60% below the peak reached in 1995, but also not falling at the rate needed to eradicate AIDS, the UN warned.

“The world is currently not on track to achieve” the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.noted Winnie Bayanyima, executive director of the UN AIDS agency.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS launched a new report, “Now’s Urgency: AIDS at a Crossroads,” on the occasion of the 25th International AIDS Conference in Munich. The data show that “due to a lack of progress in prevention, new HIV infections are not falling fast enough and are rising in three regions of the world,” Bayanyima said.

Uneven progress

Since the peak in 1995, the number of new HIV infections reported in 2023 (1.3 million) has declined by 60.6%, but this figure is still three times higher than the target of 370,000 or fewer new infections set for 2025, UNAIDS reminds.

In contrast, the figure declined in Asia-Pacific, Western and Central Europe, North America, the Caribbean, West and Central Africa, and East and Southern Africa.

There are currently 39.9 million people living with HIV worldwide, of whom 38.6 million are aged 15 years and older and 1.4 million are children.
