57-65 | Spain fails to complete comeback and will fight for bronze

23.08.2024 – 23:05

Spain responded but did not have enough time to turn the tide of a match in which the U16 women’s team was always behind the powerful France. This Saturday Italy will be fighting for third and fourth place.

It was probably an early final. Spain and France went to court, knowing that the opponent for gold would be the amazing Finland. But Cristina Cantero’s team failed to get to the match. They were able to physically hold off their opponents, but the attack was tight and by the break they were -10 (27-37).

Spain could not find the key. It was saved thanks to the good work of Marta Llompart and Mar Segura, who were successful in attack, but France continued to dominate the offensive rebound and had double opportunities. At the beginning of the last quarter it was -18 (38-56), and that’s when Spain responded. Strong in defense and risky in attack, they scored 14 points in six minutes and went up 55-59. But they ran out of energy to complete the comeback.

Spain have a chance to pick up a new training medal after their semi-final defeat, and there will be plenty of podiums in the women’s category (along with silver for the U20 and U18 and bronze for the U17 in Mexico).
