This harrowing documentary from Ukrainian filmmaker Mstislav Chernov is likely to be a frontrunner in several Oscar categories. It describes the 20 days Chernov spent with colleagues in the besieged city of Mariupol after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. With footage taken by Frontline and Associated Press journalists, Chernov has documented the atrocities of war from an intensely personal perspective.

Leo (Netflix)
Adam Sandler lends his voice to this animated musical comedy featuring a coming-of-age tale told by a class pet. Tired 74-year-old lizard Leo (Sandler) has been trapped in a Florida fifth-grade classroom with his tank-mate turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr) for decades. After overhearing a conversation that led him to believe he did not have much longer to live, Leo decided to get out and experience life outside. He gets his chance when the teacher decrees that every student must take Leo home for the weekend, but as he gets caught up in baby problems, freedom becomes a consideration.

The Marsh King’s Daughter (PVOD)
Daisy Ridley stars in this psychological thriller based on the novel by Karen Dion. Helena lives an ordinary life – married to husband Stefan (Garrett Hedlund) and with a young daughter. But she’s hiding a dark and dangerous secret: her estranged father is the infamous Marsh King (Ben Mendelsohn), who kidnapped her mother and held them both captive in the woods for years. Oppenheimer (PVOD)
If you missed the dramatic Barbenheimer experience, you can now catch the doubleheader at home via VOD. Cillian Murphy J. Robert Oppenheimer, widely known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb”. The story follows the young Oppenheimer from studying theoretical physics to teaching quantum physics to developing the atomic bomb on the orders of Lieutenant General Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) during World War II.
Oppenheimer sets up the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where he is joined by brilliant minds including Isidor Isaac Rabi (David Krumholtz) and Edward Teller (Benny Safdie). But years later, Oppenheimer is having regrets.

In the new fantasy comedy Genie, Melissa McCarthy plays the titular genie, who has been doing her thing for millennia. One day, he is called by Bernard Bott (Papa Essiedu), whose marriage to his wife Julie (Dennie Benton) is falling apart and whose young daughter Eve (Jordan McIntosh) barley knows him. Just before Christmas, Bernard misses Eve’s birthday and is fired from his job. Frustrated, he scavenges an old jewelery box and unknowingly leaves Flora inside. Maybe, just maybe, he can help her get her family back.

Good Burger 2 (Paramount Plus)
Sequels made decades after the first film are very popular (Top Gun: Maverick, Coming 2 America). Joining those fantastic titles is Good Burger 2, which is based on a 1997 comedy based on a sketch from the Nickelodeon series All That. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reunite as Dexter Reed and Cashier Ed, respectively. Dexter is down on his luck after another invention fails, but he is welcomed with open arms by Ed at a fast food restaurant. They’ve got a new crew of co-workers and, naturally, kidnappings begin.

Director Paul Schrader’s latest crime thriller completes a trilogy of sorts that includes 2017’s First Reformed and 2021’s The Card Counter. All three are linked by the image of a man sitting at his desk writing in a journal while the camera pans around him.
In The Master Gardener, Norvel Roth (Joel Edgerton) is a meticulous horticulturist at Gracewood Gardens, a beautiful estate owned by wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver). Narvel’s carefully curated life begins to unravel when she demands he take on his troubled niece Maya (Quintessa Swindell) as an apprentice.
