The Infinity War star improvised one of the most heartbreaking scenes with Elizabeth Olsen that fans still can’t get over

If only there was a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe more heartbreaking than Avengers: Endgamefor sure it will be none other than Avengers: Infinity War. A literal masterpiece created by the Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo), the 2018 blockbuster contained some of the most harrowing scenes of all time, including death scenes for many of the main characters.

But the worst death scene of all, other than Loki’s at the very beginning of the film, was Vision’s. What made this whole thing most heartbreaking and unforgettable was that it was his love interest Wanda who had to put an end to it. However, while the on-screen scene itself was completely devastating, it would have been created almost differently if Paul Bettany hadn’t improvised it with Elizabeth Olsen.

While other characters’ deaths (or disappearances) following Thanos’ snap have broken many hearts, there is no other death in the world. Avengers: Infinity War earned as many tears as Vision. In fact, even Loki’s death at the beginning of the film is second only to the death of Paul Bettany’s Marvel character!

But there’s a fact that most people don’t know about Vision’s death: it didn’t initially go as smoothly as what was eventually shown on screen. This was because the death scene visualization simply couldn’t work in real life for several reasons.

Recently at MegaCon in Orlando, Bettany shared details about how he was able to improvise a scene with co-star Elizabeth Olsen. Speaking to Collider, he said:

“It was fun. None of us knew who was going to die until the day before or something like that,” Bettany said. “They showed us kind of a pre-rendering of it, and everyone was like, well, I guess I need to take the kids out of private school.”

The biggest problem was that due to Marvel’s policy of complete secrecy, no one knew who was going to die until they were very close to filming the scene. So, since the scene couldn’t go according to the script and plan, someone had to improvise.

Nevertheless, even in such a limited time, something had to be done. So, seeing no other option, the Russo brothers, that is, Joe and Anthony Russo, called upon Bettany and Olsen to improvise the scene. As Paul Bettany recalled:

“The Russo Brothers came to us (Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen) and said, ‘Hey, listen, can you just improvise this scene?’ And I say: “What? Improvise by pretending to be a dead robot? I don’t have a coordinate system!”

This presented a serious problem main problem for the entire cast and crew as the originally planned scene couldn’t work and the actors involved in the scene couldn’t even improvise because they had “no frame of reference” about how to kill a robot.

But then Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen automatically took the lead and everything was arranged in the most flawless manner to result in a masterpiece that was Avengers: Infinity War.

Although initially, when they were asked to improvise a death scene, neither Paul Bettany nor Elizabeth Olsen had any idea how to do it, they ended up doing it their way and in turn, ended up creating one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever . V Avengers: Infinity War.

They did this by doing the same thing they did in the film: trusting each other to the core. Bettany went on to explain how the scene ended up the way it did:

“Lizzie was just laughing about it and we’re so relaxed with each other that… I don’t know how it would have worked other than that because we both really trust each other and somehow we got to something that have worked. “

Well, first of all, this scene literally did more than just “have worked”considering that fans cannot relive this heartbreaking tragic scene even now, more than half a century after the film’s release!
