One shot was killed at a Houston church, according to authorities.
(CNN) — Houston Police Chief Troy Finneran told reporters at a news conference Sunday that the shooter at the Lakewood church was a woman aged 30 to 35, who was armed with a long rifle and had a child with her.
“He died in this incident,” Feiner said.
According to the chief, the age of the minor is around 4 to 5 years. As soon as the woman entered the church, he started firing, he said. Two off-duty police officers confronted the attacker and hit him.
“Unfortunately, the 5-year-old boy suffered injuries and is in critical condition at a local hospital,” Finner said. “I don’t think a 57-year-old man, who had nothing to do with this, was shot in the leg. “He is undergoing treatment in the hospital.”
The chief later said it was unclear who fired the shot that hit the boy.
Police said it was also not clear what was the motive for the shooting or what was the boy’s relation to the attacker.
Officers responded to the reported shooting at Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church, the Houston Police Department (HPD) said in a statement. x post on Sunday.
“HPD is responding to a report of shots fired at 3700 Southwest Freeway,” police said. “This is an active and developing situation. Please avoid this area. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
Lakewood Church, a megachurch about 10 km from downtown Houston, confirmed reports of “shootings” and said in x: “There is an active situation involving shots fired against Lakewood. Law enforcement is on scene. This is all the information we have at this time. Please pray for Lakewood and our community.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also public More said about the incident: “The information remains preliminary as things are still developing. It is believed that one of the would-be attackers was killed at the scene by one of our officers. “I’m going to the scene.”
In a statement Sunday afternoon, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said: “Our condolences go out to those affected by today’s tragic shooting, and to the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred.”
The governor said he is in contact with local and state authorities “to help support this community and bring the perpetrator who committed this heinous act to justice quickly.”
A Lakewood parishioner at the scene told CNN affiliate KPRC that he was waiting inside the church for the Spanish service to begin when he heard multiple gunshots. A pastor at the church ordered the man to run, he told KPRC. According to the church’s website, the service was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET.

Lakewood Church, located in what is now a sports stadium, was founded by Osteen’s father in the 1950s.
