It may be contagious
Hospital sources clarify that “during the acute phases, infected people can become infected through contact with blood.” For this reason, direct contacts are traced.
A retrovirus is used.
Most patients with Crimean Congo disease are treated with a retroviral drug called Ribavirin, but experts are already saying that “it is not very effective.” It is also used in some cases of hepatitis and even for inpatient treatment of respiratory syncytial virus, which causes bronchiolitis.
Origin of the disease
During a Soviet military raid on the Crimean Peninsula in the mid-20th century, soldiers were stung while sleeping in the open air. A few days later they became seriously ill: they had a high fever and blood was flowing through their vessels. It has also been linked to a virus present in the blood of people living in the Congo, hence the name Crimean-Congo disease.
