A cardiologist openly spoke about a habit that affects health and increases the risk of arrhythmia – Weekend
What happens to our hearts, even young hearts? Heart rate changes have increased significantly in the population under 60 years of age. Recent research from an American university shows that the incidence is increasing even in young people. But the truth is that arrhythmia can lead to very serious problems.
In “The Weekend” we will try to find out what it consists of, with the help of Dr. Manuel Angita, representative of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and head of the department of clinical cardiology at the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Cordoba.

Arrhythmias are “any change in heart rhythm other than the normal heart rhythm. Specifically, atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia that is characterized by irregularity. The distance between impacts is completely different. The person notices palpitations, discomfort and can cause serious complications.
The doctor warns: this can cause very serious complications, especially “ ictusif part of this clot enters the arterial circulation.”
Regarding these latest studies that we mentioned earlier, he explains that “atrial fibrillation, which is the most common arrhythmia of all, is considered an age-related arrhythmia. Spanish studies over 75, 80 years of age show that at this age, one in five suffers from atrial fibrosis.”
There was a study called “Research Proposals” “in which, by analyzing the general population of Spaniards over 40 years of age, we concluded that almost 5% of all Spaniards over 40 years of age suffered from atrial fibrillation. This American study highlights what we are already seeing in Spain too.”
“Young people are increasingly being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation”
Indeed, up to the age of 60, “this is observed more and more often. It is also being diagnosed more often in young people.”
Is it because we have more detection methods, or does the research warn of something that should be taken into account?
Both, the doctor answers, because “More and more short-term cases of atrial fibrillation are being identified. “This is because many young people who do not have other cardiac injuries may have short episodes and not realize it.”
True, now, with the emphasis that experts place on the importance of early detection of this disease, “more and more cases are being identified that were not previously detected. But what’s more important is that the incidence is rising among young people.” and “It has to do with lifestyle. Unhealthy habits are closely linked to an increased risk of heart problems.”
The doctor identifies two: obesity, which is closely associated with atrial fibrosis in young people, and “tobacco, alcohol, taking any drugs, including energy drinks.” “This is the reason for the increase in myocardial infarctions and atrial fibrillation.”

We must influence this. These drinks are bad for the heart, although “more attention should be paid to smoking, alcohol, exercise and healthy habits. When it comes to energy drinks, they have been shown to be bad for the heart.”“time bombs that can cause sudden death in a healthy person.”
As for whether Covid has anything to do with the increase in these arrhythmias, Dr. Manuel Anguila says that “we’ve seen a small epidemic of heart attacks among young people, and they were all blood clots. Covid was also associated with inflammation in various organs, at the level of the heart, but this resulted in arrhythmias of the opposite type. “This association with atrial fibrillation was not as clear.”
Finally, we ask ourselves: What should a listener do if he discovers that he is suffering from an arrhythmia? Well, go to the doctor, especially if the person is elderly.
