In 2022 alone, government lottery and betting sales exceeded €9,687 million, prizes totaled €6,148 million, and government coffers collected €3,486 million.
Of this public company’s profits, €25.5 million was donated to social causes, adding 1,072,748 beneficiaries, while its suppliers took €229 million, while employing 516 people.
The origins of this state-owned company go back more than two centuries, to 1763, when the then King Kalos III established the so-called “Royal Lottery”, the proceeds of which were intended to benefit hospitals, hospices and other public institutions.
The first draw held was similar to La Primitiva, and half a century later the National Lottery began.
It was then, several decades later, that the name was changed from Lotería Real to Lotería Primitiva Nacional. shortly before celebrating the first centenary of its creation, it was renamed the National Lottery..
In the 20th century it began to take a form more similar to the one known today. Red Cross, La Quiniela, La Primitiva, El BonoLoto and El Gordo draws have been added.
The innovation will continue into the 21st century with the introduction of new lotteries such as Euromillions, Lototurf, Quintuple Plus and El Quinigol.
Then came December 3, 2010, when a decree created the state-owned enterprise Loterías y Apuestas del Estado as we know it today.
