Correa loses Formula 2 podium due to multiple FIA sanctions
Juan Manuel Correa missed out on his first Formula 2 podium since his horror crash in 2019 at Spa-Francorchamps after stewards handed him a series of penalties for exceeding track limits at the Spanish Grand Prix. The FIA fined him five seconds off the race time for four trips off the track.and five more for the fifth violation.
Only Zane Maloney exceeded this figure as his penalty was fifteen seconds for six offences, although two of these had already been given during the race, meaning he only lost one position in the final classification on Saturday afternoon. The American started in fourth place but, like Kush Maini, took advantage of a pair of penalties against Ritomo Miyata to move onto the podium.
In final order Juan Manuel Correa finished five places lower, in eighth., behind the Japanese, and this brought championship leader Paul Aron to the podium. Andrea Chimi Antonelli also dropped five places with a single five-second penalty and eventually finished 15th, although the hardest hit was Franco Colapinto, who dropped up to seven places to finish 18th.
Dennis Hauger and Roman Stanek also faced ten-second penalties, with the former losing three places to finish 12th and the latter suffering no consequences after finishing last. The exit at Turn 13 caused the most problems as it was the one leading up to the finish, meaning the drivers took the most risks to reach the finish with more speed and activate DRS.
