Samsung’s New Foldables Are Not Dust-Proof

Yesterday Samsung unveiled its new foldable phonesSamsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. The Koreans have once again presented their foldable phones as the benchmark that other manufacturers will have to look to to see how competitive they can be in the market, boasting IP48 certification with much fanfare.

What do we know about this certification? Well, basically it means that the phone resistant to solid objects, dust and water. Each digit that makes up the number next to the letters “IP” represents a degree of the scale, which in the first case goes from 0 to 6, and in the second – from 0 to 9.

The degrees of the scale lead to confusion

While the first digit of this IP certification is very good, as Android Authority tells us, all that glitters is not gold, namely Samsung’s new foldable devices. They are not protected from dust..

Because? I’m glad you asked me that question. Previously, these terminals had an IPX8 certificate, which was significantly improved with the advent of IP48. Now the number “4” in the certification means objects measuring one millimeter or more. That is, anything smaller than 1 mm (and dust, of course, is there) can slip through the cracks of the phone.

Come on, what? It wouldn’t be a good idea to play funeral for a folding device on the beach. The lack of dust protection was already mentioned in the small print of the device on Samsung’s website, but many users may not realize it (or have stopped thinking about it). At least they’re safe if they fall into water.

In any case, it seems that the industry is taking steps So next year we won’t have to choose whether we want dustproof or waterproof. Right now it’s more of a wish than a reality, but we’ll see what happens when 2025 rolls around.
