The CMF Phone 1 was an economical and unique option in the Android world. However, what really caught the attention of users was an unexpected feature: Its depth sensor can see through objects..

This amazing trick is not available through the Camera app but requires a third-party app. For privacy reasons, There is no confirmation that this feature will be disabled via a software update.

To keep the price attractive, the CMF Phone 1 has decided to forgo a dedicated secondary camera, instead going with a 50MP main sensor and an unspecified depth sensor. While this depth sensor is not accessible by standard means, One user managed to unlock its potential using a third-party app in developer mode.

This user’s initial tests revealed a low-resolution black-and-white image. However, when he pointed the camera at his TV remote control, the sensor revealed the internal location of the batteries without having to remove the cover.


The video quickly went viral among X users, prompting Akis Evangelides, co-founder of Nothing, to step in and explain the situation.

According to Evangelides, lThe reason for this phenomenon is the lack of an infrared filter in the depth sensor. This absence allows infrared light to pass through, which can be a problem in certain situations. “to reveal the internal structure of thin or translucent objects”especially from black acrylic.

In response, Evangelides announced that the company would restrict third-party apps’ access to the depth sensor “within a week” via a software update.

In the comments, some users asked why this “cool feature” was being removed. Evangelides acknowledged its appeal, but responded cryptically.: “Some people are attacking us from all sides, friend. They are not happy with our success. So we have to tread carefully.”
