Irene Monteiro will be the Left’s candidate Parliamentary group of the far left to preside over the European ParliamentOn which the vote will take place this Tuesday. A candidacy that, in any case, will not make much progress, since everything indicates that the Maltese Roberta , Metsola of the European People’s Party will be re-elected for a second term after a deal between populists, socialists and liberals.

The former Spanish Minister of Equality, who was a Podemos candidate in the last European elections on June 9, announced the appointment on her social networks, thanking her group colleagues for their trust and promising to fight “for a Europe of peace, feminism and rights”, for the end of the genocide against the Palestinian people and because no human being is illegal.

Podemos sources have confirmed the announcement, reinforcing Montero’s message that during the next five years they will focus on “defending peace, ending the genocide in Palestine, feminist and LGTBI rights, and breaking the war-torn Europe”.

“Irene Montero has been proposed as a candidate by several delegations and approved by ratification,” say the same sources. Montero will also hold one of the group’s vice presidents positions.

The Left group is composed of four Spanish MEPs (Two from Podemos, one from Sumar and the other from EH Bildu) and constitute 42 MPs from different countries – 6% of the entire European Parliament -, highlighting the nine from Insoumise France Melanchon– or the eight of the Italian Five Star Movement. Also members of this group are Syriza (Greece) or Portuguese Communist Party,
