Sevilla’s Japan tour suspended

A major unforeseen development in Sevilla’s pre-season. The tour that was due to take place in Japan at the end of July has been suspended because one of the two planned friendlies could not be played. Sevilla had agreed a friendly on July 30 against Consadole Sapporo and a friendly on August 2 against Sagan Tosu, but the inability to play either means the tour has been suspended.

This suspension represents a change in the sport, as new preparations must now be found. In pre-season, this is more than a little strange, as it is taking place in the club’s Ciudad Deportiva in the intense Seville heat, and now we have to improvise. All roads lead to Portugal, where Sevilla will play a friendly in the Algarve on Tuesday and where they intend to return in August.

It also represents an economic setback, another one, since the tour of Japan was supposed to benefit Seville. Specifically, it was announced at the time: “The tour enjoys the support of the local governments of Sapporo and Tosu, as well as the country’s football organizations, who hope that “The visit of Sevilla Football Club will serve the further development of football in Japan.”

Sevilla have visited Japan before, but their return to Japanese soil will not be until 2024.
