Kamala Harris optimistic despite Donald Trump’s “lies” – DW – 07/28/2024

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, acknowledged this Saturday (07/27/2027) that it will be difficult to defeat Donald Trump in the November 5 elections, but said that her recently launched presidential campaign will prevail over the “serious lies” of her Republican rival.

While Trump was preparing to speak at a bitcoin conference in Tennessee, Harris was attending a fundraising event in Pittsfield, Massachusetts with celebrity guests including singer-songwriter James Taylor and cellist Yoyo Ma.

“We’re behind in this race, but this is a people-powered campaign,” he told the crowd at the event, which his team said raised $1.4 million.

“You may have noticed that Donald Trump has resorted to some serious falsehoods about my record. And some of the things he and his cronies are saying are just bizarre,” he said.

In his recent intervention at a religious conference, Trump accused Harris of being an anti-Semite who wants to allow the killing of newborn babies.

“She doesn’t like Jews. She doesn’t like Israel. That’s just the way it is,” the Republican said of the vice president, whose husband is Jewish.

In one of his most exaggerated statements, he accused Harris of wanting to enshrine in federal law the right to “remove a baby from the womb in the eighth or ninth month and even kill the baby after birth.”

Trump, 78, now the oldest presidential candidate in history, is struggling to rebuild his electoral strategy against someone two decades younger after 81-year-old President Joe Biden withdrew from the race over concerns about his physical and mental abilities.

To become the first female president in US history, Harris will have to campaign immediately to balance an opponent who has been in re-election mode practically since taking office in 2016.

Surveys show a dire scenario

Harris’s late candidacy for the White House began with a favorable initial moment, as polls are already showing a closer scenario and a Democratic recovery against Trump than the figures shown for Biden.

Harris has already received endorsements from Democratic heavyweights such as Biden and, more recently, Barack and Michelle Obama.

Introducing Harris at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, James Taylor said, “Let us honor that woman and that moment, and let our fervent support be the wind in her path. Our hopes go with her and she represents us all.”

At his event on Saturday, Trump enthusiastically mentioned the cryptocurrency industry in his speech, which he had previously called a “scam.”

“It’s like the steel industry 100 years ago,” Trump said at a bitcoin conference. “I think they’re still in their infancy.”

“If cryptocurrencies are going to define the future, I want them to be mined, created, and manufactured in the United States,” he said, calling the United States the “cryptocurrency capital of the planet.”

He also said he would return to holding outdoor rallies with additional Secret Service protection, two weeks after he was wounded in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally.

“I will continue to hold outdoor events, and the Secret Service has agreed to ramp up their operations substantially. They are very capable of doing that,” Trump said on his Truthout social platform.

“Nobody can be allowed to prevent or obstruct freedom of expression or assembly,” he said.

His comments came after the Secret Service reportedly encouraged the Trump campaign to stop scheduling outdoor campaign events and opt for large indoor stadiums instead.

Trump was injured after a 20-year-old man shot at him during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, killing one person and injuring two others.
