The first Starfield expansion received “mostly negative” reviews on STEAM, and the game’s player count dropped by 95%.
The long-awaited Shattered Space expansion to Bethesda’s sci-fi role-playing video game Starfield has received a largely negative reaction on Steam, with player numbers plummeting. According to the latest data, the game’s concurrent user limit has dropped by more than 95% since its launch in 2023.
Released on September 30th for $29.99, which is in addition to the base game’s $69.99, the expansion failed to attract players, many of whom expressed their disappointment in reviews. Even some comments labeled “positive” point out flaws in the storytelling and gameplay. Players describe the story as “boring”, recommending the game only to those who “need some sleep before a long day”.

Other players have noted that the expansion is simply “more of the same,” calling it mediocre and suggesting that you wait until it goes on sale to buy it. There is also a repeated lack of innovation, not even a significant improvement over the base game. “Really terrible. This game needed Far Harbor, but instead we got something more like Mothership Zeta. The only positive is that visually it’s stunning, but everything else is terrible. There is almost no loot or new equipment, the characters and plot are banal/predictable, the script is a bit amateurish,” says one player.
Something similar to what another Steam user commented, who in his review said that for him, Bethesda Game Studios’ DLC “used to be a surefire way to get me back into the game,” but Starfield was a “big disappointment.” “The over-reliance on procedural generation has made a space exploration game completely boring and not very interesting to explore. “The role-playing aspects that were the main focus before launch were as shallow as ever, and the core story was unfortunately very boring,” he says.
