NASA rover discovers ‘human face’ on Mars
pareidolia (that is, the psychological phenomenon by which the human mind associates certain random shapes with recognizable objects) appears again on Mars, where over the decades, various rovers and vehicles exploring the Martian surface have found various rocks and formations that remind us of famous figures.
The last of these was a stone structure found Perseverance Rover in which you can recognize the features of half a human face from the side.
Image, the portal reports Gizmodowas made on September 27 in Jezero Craterwhich he has been exploring since his arrival in 2021, looking for signs of possible past microscopic life. It is believed that there was water in this crater billions of years ago.
This isn’t even the first time “faces” have been observed on Mars. For example, in 2023, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed what appeared to be a typical smiling face, or smileyon the surface. And many years ago, in 1976, the Viking probe, the first in history to land on Mars, discovered a rise in the shape of a human face in a Martian region called Sidonia which gave rise to all sorts of speculation.
However, in later images taken at higher resolution, it was discovered that the shapes in the original photographs had this appearance due to shadow effect.
