Primary care pediatricians believe it is necessary to improve influenza vaccination coverage

In October, all autonomous communities began flu vaccination campaignI that this year Includes boys and girls under five years of age. However, last year the level of coverage in this group was significantly low, reaching only 36% in Spainwith some communities such as Madrid and Catalonia are below this figure. The Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatricians (AEPap) calls on families and administrations to improve these indicators and protect minors and their families from the influenza virus.

Dr. Pedro Gorrotxategui, President of AEPap, emphasizes the need for pediatricians to inform parents about the importance of vaccinating children against the flu. Although society typically associates the vaccine with protecting older people, Dr. Ignacio Domingo, coordinator of the AEPap vaccine group, clarifies that children are also at significant risk. In fact, young children are hospitalized for influenza at the same rates as children over 60 years of age.

Although the flu is more dangerous for older people, Children may develop serious complicationssuch as pneumonia, even without risk factors. Thus, vaccination not only protects others by reducing transmission, but is also critical for the health of minors themselves, who may require hospitalization if they become seriously ill.

Intranasal vaccines

There are two types of flu vaccines. intranasal vaccine is more comfortable, since it does not require injections and is only allowed for children from two to five years old. The intramuscular vaccine is the only option for children aged six months to two years and for children aged two to five years who cannot receive the intranasal vaccine, such as children who are immunocompromised.

It is important to emphasize that no vaccines for children under six months. To protect these minors, it is recommended to vaccinate cohabitants and practice basic hygiene measures such as frequent hand washing by adults.

AEPap President invites families to attend the event pediatric consultations information about influenza vaccination, emphasizing its relevance and necessity, like any other vaccine on the calendar. Everyone’s cooperation is important to improve coverage and protect the health of babies.
