Health authorities Rwanda (RBC) warned of a significant increase in infection cases malaria in the country over the past 9 months.
Between January and September 2024, approx. 518,000 people were infected with malaria across the country, up from 370,000 during the same period in 2023. The data also showed that the death toll among those infected stood at 61,000.
The increase in cases will be due to the effects of the current monsoon season.
Currently, local health workers in Rwanda treat about 60% of malaria cases in their communities.
Despite the recent increase in cases, Rwanda has made significant progress in reducing malaria cases by 88% over the past 7 years. Malaria incidence has decreased from approximately 5 million cases in 2017 to 600,000 in 2023.
