In 2024 Americas RegionA total of 4,213 confirmed cases of MPOX have been reported in 14 countries, including six deaths: Argentina (n= 78 cases), Bolivia (n= 1 case), Brazil (n= 1225 cases), Canada (n= 251 cases), Chile (n= 10 cases), Colombia (n= 121 cases), Costa Rica (n= 1 case), Ecuador (n= 7 cases), USA (n= 2317 cases, including three deaths), Guatemala (n= 1 case), Mexico (n= 99 cases, including one death), Panama (n=5 cases), Peru (n=89 cases, including two deaths) and Dominican Republic (n= 8 cases).

In 2024, of the 3,767 MOC cases for which information on gender and agein the Region of the Americas, where 96% of cases are male (3,622 cases), similar to cases reported in 2022–2023, and 46% of cases are in the 30 to 39 age group (1,722 cases), which is average age 34 years, with an age range from 0 to 81 years (9–17, 19).

Stay vigilant

Although not a single case of mpox belonging to the new variant of clade Ib, in Americas Region, PAHO warns that the risk of importation cannot be ruled out and health authorities are directed to continue surveillance to characterize the situation and respond quickly if a variant of the virus (MPXV) is introduced.

In May 2022 PAHO Technical Advisory Group on Vaccine-Preventable Diseases recommended that vaccination be offered only to individuals in close contact with a confirmed case of smallpox, only to high-risk individuals. In this case, the vaccine should ideally be administered within four days of exposure.
