Municipalities that have never won the Christmas lottery jackpot

Buying a tenth of the Christmas lottery is one of the Spanish Christmas traditions. The data backs this up, as the special Christmas draw known as “El Gordo” sold over 15 million tenths, according to state lottery and betting data, making it our most important and popular lottery draw for good reason.

2022 broke the record for Christmas lottery sales as they grew by 5% over the previous year and 2023 is forecast to break a new record for lottery sales.

The least fortunate municipalities of El Gordo de Navidad

In general, rural and less densely populated areas are most likely to be on the list of places where Gordo has never crashed. This is mainly due to lower sales of tenths compared to major cities or provincial capitals. However, it is important to remember that every year is a new opportunity, and the history of the giveaway shows that any place, no matter its size, can be decorated in the future.

To date, the autonomous city of Melilla is the only region of Spain where the Christmas lottery jackpot has never won. All other autonomous communities have been awarded at least once, although some very rarely, as in the case of:

  • Rioja: You have received the award only a few times.
  • Navarre: Although Gordo appeared in some episodes, he rarely played.
  • Cantabria: This is also one of the communities with the fewest El Gordo trophies ever.

The luckiest municipalities

Since 1812, there have been over 200 Christmas lottery drawings, with 345 different municipalities winning the Proudo, but the most famous municipalities are the two major cities:

  • Madrid: It is the luckiest city to win the grand prize 82 times.
  • Barcelona: Has 42 jackpots.

Despite these statistics, prizes are increasingly being distributedaccording to state lottery and betting data. A striking example occurred in 2018, when the first prize was distributed among 186 different municipalities. This phenomenon is due to the growing habit of Spaniards to buy tenths in various places in the months before the draw in the hope of attracting good luck.

Finally, the data also shows that Gordo crashes more often in provincial capitals.
