The ceasefire, which came into force on Wednesday, was agreed after 13 months of cross-border clashes and two months of open war between Israel and Hezbollah. The conflict led to large-scale population displacement in both Lebanon and Israel.

At least 3,961 people have died in Lebanon since October 2023 as a result of the conflict, the majority in recent weeks, and 16,520 have been injured, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Israel, for its part, reported the deaths of 82 soldiers and 47 civilians.

Hezbollah claims “major victory” and vows to enforce ceasefire

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem, in his first speech this Friday after the ceasefire with Israel took effect in Lebanon, confirmed that the Islamic movement has won “a major victory.”

“We won because we prevented the enemy from destroying Hezbollah and eliminating or weakening the resistance,” he said in a pre-recorded speech.

Similarly, he promised to cooperate with the Lebanese Army in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, which provides for the withdrawal of Israeli troops and Islamic militias from southern Lebanon.

“There will be high-level coordination between the resistance and the Lebanese army to implement the terms of the agreement,” Qassem assured. “No one should bet on problems or conflicts with the military,” he said.
