A mysterious Christmas filming overwhelms the Chinchón tourist office | Madrid

A mysterious Christmas shoot has turned the streets of Chinchón (5,506 inhabitants) upside down for seven days. The City Council of the municipality, about 46 kilometers southeast of Madrid, published on August 25 on its official Twitter account that they were looking for “extras” for an “important Christmas announcement” about which officially no more can be said. The ad called for 80 people over the age of four, willing to participate in the recording of the video. The news spread on social networks and the local tourist office, where those interested could register, received such a barrage of calls and emails from people from neighboring towns and other autonomous communities that the publication was withdrawn four days later. The announcement did not specify that the participants had to be registered in the town and that they would not receive financial compensation. Once the error was corrected, the long queues in front of the tourist office have disappeared and this Wednesday the process of searching for neighbors for the promotional video has been closed, as announced by the Consistory on Twitter.

The 80 people are already selected, but the secrecy surrounding the shooting continues. The City Council has signed a confidentiality agreement with the company in charge of the recording and not even the participants know yet what announcement it is. At the tourist office, accustomed to managing filming in the municipality, they did not expect such an “overflow” in participation. The selection process was open until September 6, but three days before that, all places are already covered. Although nothing about the filming can be revealed, municipal sources point out that if three or four iconic Christmas advertisements are recorded each year, including the famous and long-awaited video of the lottery, “this is one of them”.

The little that is known about the video for now is that it will be shot in two sessions, one on Sunday, September 11 and the other on October 24, and that the main location will be the Plaza Mayor de Chinchón. The green balconies, and the bars and restaurants of the arcades, in addition to the recording team, the participating neighbors and the occasional curious person, will be the first to discover what is being filmed in what has been described as one of the most beautiful towns from Spain.

It is not the first time that the square, now converted into a bullring for the town’s festivities, has been transformed into a film set. Orson Welles chose it as the setting for his film Midnight Chimes (1965) and Cantinflas faced a bull in the movie Around the World in 80 Days (1956) in that same enclave.

The same thing happens to Chinchón, which in the summer of 2021 hosted the filming of asteroid City, the new film by American filmmaker Wes Anderson (53 years old), still in production. The director built two large sets on the outskirts of the municipality, to resemble a desert and a train station, and actors such as Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson or Margot Robbie traveled to the town for the recording. Since then, they say in the City Council, the town “is experiencing a new golden age of cinema.”
