A police officer was injured in an attack on a synagogue in the south of France

A municipal police officer was injured this Saturday in an attack against a synagogue in the town of La Grande Motte (southern France, near Montpellier), the authorities announced.

Two vehicles were set on fire near the Beth Yaakov synagogueOne of them was carrying a gas cylinder, which caused an explosion that injured the agent, who was taken to hospital, although first information suggests he did not suffer serious injuries.

The incident, which happened shortly before 8:30 (6:30 GMT), is of “clearly criminal” origin, said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin in Aix, who assured “our Jewish fellow citizens and the city of my full support.”

“All means have been exhausted to trace the author,” he said.

The flames reached the doors of the synagogue, which was empty at the time, according to public radio, which said the fire broke out in four different places. The attack occurred on a day of the week when the temple has the highest attendance.

The prefect (government representative) of the Hérault department announced that he had ordered the police and gendarmerie to “strengthen the protection of Jewish interests in the department”.
