tokyo, Japan issued a tsunami warning on Monday after a series of powerful earthquakes in the Sea of Japan.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported earthquakes off the coast of Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures shortly after 4:00 pm (local time), one of them with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6.
It issued a severe tsunami warning for Ishikawa and a low-level warning and warning for the rest of the northwestern coast of Honshu island.
Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK TV, warned of torrents of water up to 5 meters (16.5 ft) high and urged people to flee to higher ground or the roofs of nearby buildings as quickly as possible.
The network indicated that tsunami waves could continue to reach the coast and warnings were still being issued an hour after the first warning.
The government will hold a press conference later in the day. No immediate damage was reported.
A tsunami about 3 meters (9.8 ft) high was expected to hit Niigata and other prefectures on Japan’s west coast. The television station reported that it had already been confirmed that small tsunami waves reached the coast.
There is a nuclear power plant in the area. Tokyo Electric Power Co., the infrastructure operator, said it was investigating the problems, but no irregularities were initially reported.
Japan is a country that is highly sensitive to earthquakes. In March 2011, a powerful earthquake and tsunami caused a nuclear power plant to malfunction.
