A Spanish tourist was assaulted and gang-raped in Northeast India

A Spanish tourist has been attacked and gang-raped in an area in northern India where she was vacationing with her husband, according to official sources. A Brazilian-born woman with Spanish citizenship and her husband, also Spanish, were on a cycling holiday.

According to officials, the woman and her husband had pitched a tent in the remote Dumka district of Jharkhand state to spend the night on Friday when seven men attacked them while they were sleeping. The victim is undergoing treatment in the regional hospital. The local police had registered a complaint of assault and gang rape. Police sources said three people have been arrested in connection with what happened, although according to the husband of the rape victim, seven people were involved.

“This is a condemnable incident and the police are taking appropriate action. The culprits will not be spared,” Jharkhand state regional minister Mithilesh Kumar Thakur told the press. The Spanish Embassy in India has contacted authorities and sent personnel to the area for consultation.

According to details from several sources consulted by EFE, the couple traveled from Spain to Pakistan, then Bangladesh, India and finally Nepal. “They attacked us in the shop, they beat us, they put a knife on my throat saying they were going to kill us and seven people raped her,” the victim’s husband said. His companion, who was with him in the recording, with full facial expressions, indicated that the people who attacked him had also robbed him, although he assured: “We had very little to do with it, their real motive was to kill me.
