FC Cartagena SAD announces an agreement reached today with Abelardo Fernandez, under which the Asturian coach joins the club to lead the Albinegro first team for the 2024-2025 season. Abelardo will lead the Albinegro project from the bench in Cartagonova for a fifth consecutive campaign in the silver category of Spanish football.
Abelardo is a coach who knows this category and already knows what it means to manage prestigious teams, both in LaLiga Hypermotion and in the top category of Spanish football. He will arrive in Cartagonova together with Juan Antonio Morga, physical trainer and second coach who has already accompanied him in his performances in Vitoria and Gijon. His first experience on the bench was always with the Real Sporting Gijon team, which saw him grow and achieve success as a footballer. In 2008, he began his career as a coach with the Sportingguista subsidiary, the first of Abelardo’s three stints with the Asturian team. The Gijón-born coach coached the 2ªB reserve team for several years before working with Candas and Tuilla before returning to Sporting in the 2012/13 season, again to coach the second team.
After a year and a half in Pitu’s reserve team, Abelardo managed to move into the first team and made his debut as a coach in the Second Division on 05/10/2014, beating Hercules 2:1 at Molinon. Abelardo reached the playoffs for Sporting without reaching the coveted place in the top category.
