Allergic diseases represent direct costs of €1,800 to €6,600 per patient per year.
VALENCIA, Spain, June 2, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — According to a study collected through the European HEAD Registry, the cost of treating allergic diseases ranges from 1,823 to 6,656 euros per patient per year, if only direct healthcare-related costs are taken into account . promoted by EAACI, which is holding its congress at the Valencia Fair until Monday 3 June.
“Allergic diseases and asthma are among the most common chronic diseases worldwide and represent a significant global health burden. However, its real impact is difficult to assess due to the lack of representativeness and incompleteness of the available data.“, explain it Dr. Ioana Agache, Chairperson of the EAACI Research and Outreach Committee (ROC). The HEAD Registry was launched to describe models of care for allergy and asthma and assess their impact on costs, both economic and personal. On average, adult patients lost 2.68 to 5.33 days of work, children lost 14.88 to 24.09 days of school, and their families lost 3.99 to 23.35 days.
“According to this study, the significant burden posed by allergic diseases requires immediate action to improve its treatment.“, states Dr. Agache. “Treatments recommended by EAACI guidelines can improve outcomes, but comprehensive air cleansing efforts are required to achieve significant effects.“, he notes.
Congress is also discussing how to facilitate the translation of trial and research results into daily clinical practice. “There are some experimental approaches with great potential for clinical application, such as flow cytometry for basophil activation tests or ELISA for measuring periostin levels.“, Explain Maria Escriptese Alonso, Associate DeanResearch by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of San Pablo CEU and the director of the Institute of Applied Molecular Medicine Nemesio Diez. In addition, he emphasizes that Spain is an excellent country for translational allergy research.promoting networks in which clinicians and researchers are able to collaborate towards a common goal“
