On the eve of the celebration of the X Summit of North American Leadersthe Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeaudeclared that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) had to comply with the rules of the trade agreement.

This was announced by the Canadian official in an interview with the news agency Reuterswhere he assured that both he and the US president, Joe Bidenthey will present this position to the first Mexican president.

“Both the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and I are going to be quite clear with President López Obrador that this must be understood as a way to help Mexico develop to attract investment from companies in Canada and the United States”

He also said he understands that AMLO would like to place more emphasis on state energy companies, “but that has to be done responsibly, in a way that understands that he is part of the T-MEC and it has to abide by those rules,” he asserted.

Those statements do allusion to Mexican energy policy that caused a stir internationally after the approval of the Electricity Industry Law (LIE) with which the federal government gives greater importance to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) over the private and foreign energy industry.

Therefore, in July 2022, the United States (USA) and Canada initiated an interposed dispute considering that energy policy is violative to the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA). This was initially presented by the US and later joined by Canada.

The issue will be discussed at the Summit and Trudeau was confident that progress would be made on it. The Summit will take place from 9 to 11 January. Marcelo Ebrard Casaubonhead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported the meeting agenda.

Ebrard assured that they will cover the issues of climate change and the environment; equity, diversity and inclusion; competitiveness of the region; migration and development; Health and security.

On the first day, Biden will arrive at 1:00 p.m. and Trudeau at 2:30 p.m. During 4:00 p.m. Joe Biden and López Obrador will hold a private talk prior to the bilateral meeting with their respective delegations to later give a press conference two hours later, when Trudeau is expected to arrive at the venue.

The Summit will begin on January 10, also at the presidential compound, where López Obrador will receive the US president and the Canadian prime minister, at 11:00 o’clock.

It is estimated that the Summit will end around 3:00 p.m. with a message to the media by the three leaders. Joe Biden will return to the US immediately, but Trudeau will stay for a meeting scheduled for January 11.

On the last day, the Canadian will arrive at the National Palace at 10:00 a.m. There the official photograph will be taken and a brief conversation will continue between the presidents of Mexico and Canada, and his wives, Gutierrez Muller and Sophie Grégoire, respectively.
