Andrey Rublev broke through at the Mutua Madrid Open, winning his second career ATP Masters 1000, becoming the first player to capture the singles and doubles titles in the history of the tournament. With a sensational performance in the Spanish capital, he won his 16th ATP Tour trophy in an emotional week on Madrid clay.
The number eight overcame his nerves in an unprecedented final on the clay of the Caja Mágica to defeat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to complete one of the greatest feats of his professional career. In a match played indoors due to rain in the Spanish capital, Rublev found the strength to win one of the most important matches of his life.
“I have no words. If you knew what I’ve been through in the last nine days, you wouldn’t think I would win the title,” said Rublev, who suffered bouts of fever throughout the tournament. “I feel immensely happy. This week changes everything, now I don’t feel like I lost the last few weeks in the first round.”
“I am grateful for the work of the doctors. They helped me tremendously and I was able to get on the track.”
The Manolo Santana Stadium witnessed an important milestone in the Canadian resistance. By managing long points and eliminations from the back line, Rublev managed to turn around a very costly match in which he patiently accepted losing the first set. In a very even match, Andrey did not face any more breaking balls in the last two rounds and won the cup.
“I would say this is the title I’m most proud of in my career,” Rublev said. “I was practically dead every day. I didn’t sleep at night. I haven’t been able to rest for the last three or four days.”
The victory allows Rublev to consolidate his dominance (5-1) in the Lexus ATP Head2Head over the American. Having strengthened his authority in the final in Madrid, Andrei beat the Canadian in two clay matches of his opponent (Umag 2018) and in two matches played this season (Rotterdam).
Auger-Aliassime leaves the Mutua Madrid Open after one of the most remarkable performances of his career on clay. The Canadian made it to his second ATP Masters 1000 final after a brilliant performance in the Spanish capital, where he managed to defeat Norway’s Casper Ruud, the recent Barcelona champion. Felix will rise from 35th to 20th in the PIF ATP Rankings, taking his highest position of the season.
