Two incredible actors with an abundance of Oscars to their name, mostly in supporting roles. We believe both of them will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for their roles in “Poor Things.” Dafoe will play Dr. Baxter, who brings Bella back to life, while Ruffalo will play Duncan Wedderburn, a cunning lawyer with whom Bella runs away. Ruffalo has received three nominations in this supporting category so far, for “The Kids Are All Right” in 2011, “Foxcatcher” in 2015 and “Spotlight” in 2016. Three very different performances, but no victory. Dafoe has also received three nominations in this category – for “Platoon” in 1987, for “Shadow of the Vampire” in 2001 and for “The Florida Project” in 2018. He has also received a Best Actor nomination for “At Eternity’s Gate” in 2019.
Both of these performances seem to be very colorful roles for the actors to showcase their talents, similar to other scenery-chewing roles in the supporting actor category, such as last year’s winner, ke hui quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), 2022 Nominated J.K. simmons (“Being the Ricardos”), and 2021 nominees Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). The film’s best moments involve Gosling and the “I’m Just Kane” musical number is nothing short of excellent. Gosling brings his trademark wit, humor and ease of touch to the role and gives his best performance to date. We predict that he will receive his third Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor this time.
