A few days ago, Apple announced the next launch of its artificial intelligence: “Apple Intelligenceand, at the same time, an agreement with Open IA to develop GPT chat on their devices. It promises to be different from the initiatives we already know from Microsoft, Google or Meta, but it has also had an unexpected effect: it has once again placed the Apple brand on the throne of the most valuable company in the world.

But what is Apple Intelligence? How is it different from other AI? How has the ranking of technology companies changed around the world?

What is Apple Intelligence?

“Apple Intelligence” is nothing more than the name that Apple has chosen for its own AI. Apple unveiled this new technology at its Global Developers Conference on June 10; an event with an impressive commercial effect. Mario YanezDirector of Banking and Technology Consulting at KYNDRYL, explains that “this is an artificial intelligence model that will be present in your devices and applications and will radically change the way the famous SIRI assistant works and promises to be more private and useful.”

That’s why Apple called it Personal Intelligence. But why does the company claim it will be more private and useful? Apple’s number one goal, Yañez explains, was for Apple Intelligence to be completely private, and to achieve this goal, all data processing had to be done on the device, “that is, on the mobile phone.”

“So that if it is necessary to connect to an external model (as happens, for example, with ChatGPT), this can be done to servers created specifically for this artificial intelligence and working with Apple chips.” And Apple is so convinced of its privacy that it says auditing firms and independent experts will be able to review the code that runs on Apple’s servers to verify privacy, something that doesn’t happen with the rest of the AI.

How SIRI will change

Another change this new AI will introduce will be a radical modification to Apple’s assistant: SIRI. In addition to helping us every day with everything that happens on our iPhone, it will integrate functions that are now found in various artificial intelligence models: generating and correcting texts such as ChatGPT, generating images, compiling summaries or transcripts of our emails or WhatsApp. “Imagine a long group chat because we can ask them to summarize and share what they have achieved.”

Besides privacy, it differs from Copilot or ChatGPT in that Apple Intelligence analyzes everything that happens on your Apple device (iPhone and Mac only). “This means he can help you at any time and whenever you need it,” says the La Linterna employee and technology expert. For example, if you ask the new Siri, “When did you meet Pilar at lunch?” It will analyze the entire iPhone to give you an answer. Thanks to this, the SIRI AI will now understand everything we say or do, so much so that it can know what is happening on the screen.

In short, the iPhone with new artificial intelligence “will become our personal butler.” “In our most trusted digital assistant (sort of like JARVIS, the IRONMAN digital assistant).” To do this, you will need to know everything that happens on our mobile phone and in our Internet connections, but Apple guarantees that all this remains on the mobile phone and that the AI ​​will only come to Apple servers when we request general Internet information , which needs to be processed or sought outside of our personal context. “In any case, to trust or not to trust will be a personal choice, and we will see how European legislation evaluates it,” adds Yáñez.

The impact of Apple Intelligence on the stock market

Thanks to the announcement of Apple Intelligence and an agreement with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT with Siri, Apple soared in the stock market and went from being pushed into third place by Nvidia to surpassing Microsoft and once again becoming the world’s largest market capitalization company in less than a week. $3.285 billion compared to Microsoft’s $3.282 billion.

“We previously said that it will only work on high-end devices, not because of a commercial solution, but because a mobile phone will require a lot of computing power, which will only be provided by the most advanced technology chips. models,” explains the KYNDRYLE expert. And here is the reason for the rise of the stock market: whoever wants to use this advanced AI with this privacy capability will have to buy a phone that costs more than 1200 euros and only from Apple.

Can it reach other devices?

Of course, Yáñez reassures Expósito by guaranteeing that we will be able to have these capabilities on less powerful phones, but giving up this privacy since everything will be processed in the cloud, as is currently the case with ChatGPT, for example. “We’ll see how this evolves and how Apple responds to regulations and laws and cyber attacks because no one is immune,” he adds of Apple Intelligence’s privacy and security.

“But I give an example: when we talk about accessing a bank from a mobile phone, according to many studies, it is much safer to do this with an iPhone than with other mobile phones. This is what users and banks themselves say.”
