It is also associated with cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders (increased cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.). Regarding nutrition, it is known that Coffee is good for preventing the progression of fatty liver and there is some evidence to suggest that grape seed extract may influence the metabolic factors that cause fatty liver disease. It was recently published in the magazine BioMed Central Complementary Medicine and Therapeutics A study in which 25 patients with fatty liver were prescribed grape seed extract at a dose of 260 mg tablets twice daily for 2 months. They also included a control group of 25 patients who received a placebo.
It was found that patients taking grape seed extract experienced a significant decrease in liver test parameters (transaminases), while this was not observed in the placebo group. Additionally, 60% of patients with moderate to severe fatty liver who took the seed extract saw their liver fat disappear or decrease, resulting in mild fatty liver disease. Changes in lipid profile were also observed. Thus, in patients took grape seed extract, there was a significant decrease in total cholesterol levels, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol. On the other hand, patients taking grape seed extract had a decrease in blood pressure (from 108.4 to 95.6). The treatment was well tolerated and no side effects were observed.
In short, grape seed extract can be very useful in treating fatty liver and to combat cardiovascular diseases. However, at the Foundation we believe that further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to confirm these promising results.
