In a matter of seconds, the happy faces of the Kansas City Chiefs fans turned into complete terror. A shooting broke out in Las Vegas as the Super Bowl 58 winner’s celebration took place on Sunday. It was a moment of celebration for a city that saw American soccer’s biggest trophy arrive for the third time in five years, but a series of explosions turned the party spirit into tragedy. At least one person died and nine were injured, according to officials. According to emergency services, the condition of three is critical. Two armed people have been arrested.
“There have been shots fired around Union Station. Please leave the area,” Kansas City police wrote on social media around 2:00 p.m. (local time). The winner of the final, Chief, was marched through the streets of the city in a parade that ended in front of the city’s railway station. Players, including Patrick Mahomes, dedicated some words of gratitude to the fans there. There were also families with children in the audience.
Attendees, several tens of thousands of people, were beginning to leave the venue when explosions were heard west of the building. “It looked like fireworks, but people’s reaction was like a gunshot,” said reporter Neal Jones of KCTV, a local television station on the CBS network. The sound of the explosions was heard only for a few seconds.
“People were running to save their lives. I was running in all directions, I saw how some people fell, how they threw some kids down,” Jones said live. The sports journalist witnessed how three people were injured. One of them was taken to hospital on a stretcher by emergency services for treatment. “We have not yet determined the number of victims,” the police department said this afternoon.
