Award Ceremony, Film Premieres & Red Carpet Gallery

The 74th Berlin International Film Festival announced the winners of the fest at the awards ceremony held at the Berlinale Palast on February 24.

20 films competed for the awards in this year’s competition with Lupita Nyong’o heading the International Jury alongside Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Albert Serra, Jasmine Trinca and Oksana Zabuzhko. The Encounters Jury, Lisandro Alonso, Denis Côté and Tizza Covi choose the winners for Best Film, Best Director and the Special Jury Award.

The Golden Bear for Best Film was awarded to Dahomey by Mati Diop. Emily Watson won The Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for her role in Small Things Like These, while Sebastian Stan received The Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance in A Different Man. Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias was honored with The Silver Bear for Best Director for his film Pepe, and the Silver Bear Jury Prize went to Bruno Dumont for Empire. The Silver Grand Jury Prize was bestowed upon A Traveller’s Needs by Hong Sangsoo.

Filmmakers showed their works at the festival over the last few days with director Tim Mielants premiering his film Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson at the opening night ceremony.

Director Martin Scorsese was presented with the Honorary Golden Bear today for his lifetime achievement in an award ceremony at the Berlinale Palast on February 20.

Director Wim Wenders declared Scorsese as the ‘reigning king of cinema’ before handing him the accolade at the gala event. The red carpet affair was attended by Sharon Stone, Thelma Schoonmacher, Claudia Roth, as well as festival directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian.

He returns to the Berlinale with his documentary, Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, narrating the story of his lifelong love affair with the movies by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, whose filmography includes The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann.

The 2024 lineup featured several highlights, including La Cocina, directed by Alonso Ruiz Palacios and starring Rooney Mara; Adam Sandler’s new film Spaceman featuring Carey Mulligan; Cuckoo by Tilman Singer with Hunter Schafer; A Traveler’s Needs, starring Isabelle Huppert; Seven Veils, with Amanda Seyfried; and director Alice Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding, written by Weronika Tofilska and stars Kristen Stewart.

20 films are competing for the awards in this year’s Competition and winners will be announced at the Berlinale Palast on February 24.
