Fermin Lopez is one of La Masia’s new gems and will have a $544 million clause after extending his contract with Barça until 2029.

BARCELONA — Barcelona have tied one of their newest jewels, Fermin Lopez, to a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, which includes a €500 million ($544.4) termination clause.

Lopez, 21, missed several games early in the season with a muscle injury but started and played 45 minutes in last weekend’s 4-0 El Clasico win over Real Madrid.

Previously part of Spain’s Paris 2024 squad, the Olympic champion also produced an outstanding performance in the 4-1 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League, a match in which he provided two assists.

Lopez was trained at the club’s famous La Masia academy and spent time on loan at Linares before being promoted to the first team during the tenure of previous coach Javi Hernandez.

In the 2023/24 season, he played 42 matches and scored 11 goals. His performances last season earned him a place in Spain’s winning Euro 2024 squad, although he did not receive much playing time.

He performed strongly at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Spain beat hosts France to win the gold medal in the under-23 event.

Barcelona leads La Liga after 11 games, six points ahead of second-place Madrid.
