Bellvitge Hospital uses AI to monitor patients with severe asthma
He Belvitge Hospital Barcelona has implemented artificial intelligence (AI) voice for monitoring of patients with severe asthma. The project is supported by the use of the virtual assistant Lola and is the first case in Spain where severe asthma is used.
This assistant has a human voice, which automatically calls the patient and talk to him by asking him some questions about his condition, medication compliance or checking various parameters.
The system transforms Patients’ responses in the report which is immediately sent to the functional asthma specialists at Bellvitge Hospital via a web application. If the report contains alarming data, the system issues an alert.
Detect decompensation
The questionnaire was developed by asthma specialists at Bellvitge Hospital and included the following questions: opinion of a group of patients and non-healthcare citizens, while control and viewing of the information provided by the system is carried out by experienced health workers, who are the backbone of the telematic communication between patients and the hospital.
The project will involve a total of 250 patients with the aim of finding out whether this is more intensive automatic tracking This allows for earlier detection of decompensations and improves the evolution of patients. All participants receive preliminary information about the project, and an assistant calls them once a month, although this frequency can increase depending on the condition of each patient.
“Still 100% calls were automated I was attentive and answered correctly“, emphasizes the Catalan hospital center, which a few months ago became a pioneer in the field of telemedicine by launching a mobile application for monitoring the disease.
