Ryan Gosling He won everyone’s hearts with his performance greta gerwig“Barbie”, which broke the record earlier this year. So much so, it’s easy to forget that the three actresses performed equally well in the Warner Bros. film, which was released on July 21.
margot robbie The film stars the titular Barbie, who goes on a quest for self-discovery when she leaves Barbie Land into the real world in search of answers. We predict she’ll be nominated for Best Actress, while we also think Gosling will snag a Best Supporting Actor bid.
However, America Ferrera And Rhea Pearlman Deliver two interesting performances that are worthy of Oscar consideration. Ferrera is Gloria, a mother who works for Mattel in the real world. Ferrera’s Gloria becomes the soul of the film, along with her daughter Sasha (Ariana greenblatt, It is their mother-daughter relationship that provides the emotion and heart of the film and as such, Ferreira’s role is crucial to the film’s success. She also delivers one of the best monologues of the year, talking about the difficulties of being a modern woman. The speech is incredible and serves as Ferreira’s Oscar moment. You can see it playing on the screen at various award ceremonies and remind us of Laura DernSpeech about motherhood in “Marriage Story”. Dern wrote and directed that film, winning Best Supporting Actress for that role in 2020 noah baumbachJoe co-wrote “Barbie” with his partner Gerwig.
Meanwhile, Perlman portrays Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel. Perlman only appears in a few scenes but he brings such presence, gravitas, warmth and intelligence to the character that he leaves a lasting impression. These types of small but powerful performances often lead to nominations for Best Supporting Actress, including some famous examples judi dench for “Shakespeare in Love” in 1999 (he won), ruby d For “American Gangster” in 2008 and viola davis For “Doubt” in 2009.
Ferrera, who won an Emmy for “Ugly Betty,” and Perlman, who won four Emmys for “Cheers,” have never been nominated for an Oscar. Can one or both of them get in? As of right now, we have five predicted nominees for Best Supporting Actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), emily blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle brooks And Taraji P. Henson (both “The Color Purple”), and jodie foster (“Nyaad”). So, no Ferreira or Perlman.
But don’t count them out just yet. Supporting Actress is probably the most open race this year, certainly the most open acting race. considered to be at the forefront Lily Gladstone The field was wide open when she won Best Actress for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, although Blunt had previously held the position β she was expected to receive a nomination, but ultimately missed out. Meanwhile, “The Color Purple” is an unknown entity. It remains to be seen how this film will earn. It could be a huge hit but it could also be a big miss. If it’s the latter, both Brooks and Henson may be out entirely.
In fact, it feels like any of these artists could miss β especially with the likes of Penelope Cruz (“Ferrari”), julian moore (“May December”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), viola davis (“Air”), Sandra Huller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), and vanessa kirby (“Napoleon”) is waiting in the wings. Ferreira herself is very high, although Perlman is a little ahead. Any of these five women could easily be missed β and easily nominated.
However, if “Barbie” turns out to be as popular with Oscar voters as we expect, both Ferrera and Perlman may be taken along for the ride. We believe “Barbie” will be nominated for Picture, Gerwig for Director, Robbie for Actress, Gosling for Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Editing, Production Design and Costume Design. Ferrera and Perlman could join that list and become the latest pair of supporting actresses to be nominated for the same film – it happens a lot.
earlier this year, jamie lee curtis And Stephanie Su Nominated for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, with Curtis winning; Emma Stone And Rachel Weisz Nominated for “The Favourite” in 2019; octavia spencer And jessica chastain “The Help” was nominated in 2012, with Spencer winning; melissa leo And amy adams Leo was nominated for “The Fighter” in 2011 with a win; vera farmiga And Anna Kendrick was nominated for “Up in the Air” in 2010; Adams and Davis were nominated for “Doubt” in 2009; Catherine Zeta Jones And queen latifah in 2003, with Zeta-Jones winning for “Chicago”; Helen Mirren And maggie smith It was named “Gosford Park” in 2002; And kate hudson And frances mcdormand Was nominated for “Almost Famous” in 2001.
These are several examples since 2000, but in Oscar history there have been 36 examples of two actresses being nominated for the same film in this category. Ferrera and Perlman, who are both seeking their first Oscar nominations, could tie for 37th with “Barbie.”
