Billie Eilish said that “What Was I Made For?” Before releasing it he thought it was the culmination of his songwriting talent. – a tune for the “Barbie” soundtrack that would earn multiple Grammy Awards.
In a roundtable discussion published Thursday in The Hollywood Reporter, Eilish revealed she was feeling nostalgic before director Greta Gerwig asked the singer to create a song for her movie about the Titanic doll.
“I was honestly worried it was over for me,” Eilish said.
“We were trying and it wasn’t doing what it usually did in me. I was honestly like, ‘Hey, maybe I’ve reached my peak and I don’t know how to write anymore?'”
The singer said that she and her brother Finneas were experiencing a “day of nothingness” creatively before trying to pitch a song “just for nonsense and laughs”.
Eilish said her brother sat down at the piano and “immediately started playing.” Both talked about Barbie’s perfection and “floating beauty”, as well as comparisons to her “sudden fall” and no longer working perfectly.
“So it was like, ‘I used to float, now I just fall down.’ We wrote that and then, ‘I knew it, but now I’m not sure.’ And I was immediately like: ‘This is what I’m made for.’ “After that we were both asking questions and we did it in maybe five minutes,” she recalls.
She added: “It was like it was God. This was the perfect example of true inspiration and connection for me.”

Eilish’s Comments on “What Was I Made For?” Came after a week. Received five nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards, including in the category Song of the Year.
Before the track’s release in July, he warned his Instagram followers to “get ready to sob” and said that the song meant “completely disturbing” things to him.
He wrote at the time, “This film will change your life and hopefully this song will change too.”
