Can Ozempic cause blindness?

A recent study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology suggests a possible link between semaglutide, the active ingredient in drugs such as Ozempic and Vegovi, and an increased risk of a rare form of vision loss.

Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a condition that affects blood flow to the optic nerve, which can cause sudden, painless vision loss in one or both eyes. The study found that patients taking semaglutide for weight loss were more than seven times more likely to develop NAION than those taking other obesity drugs.

For patients using semaglutide to treat type 2 diabetes, the risk of NAION was four times higher than with other diabetes treatments. While the findings are concerning, the researchers stress that Further research is needed to confirm causality and determine the extent of the risk.

Ozempic, developed by Novo Nordisk, was initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2017. However, its use skyrocketed in late 2022 due to its popularity as a fast and effective weight loss aid, fueled by celebrity and social media influencer endorsements.

This surge in demand has caused a global shortage of the drug and restrictions on its use in Europe, limiting its use to patients who really need it. Ozempic has also come under scrutiny for other potential side effects, including alopecia, suicidal thoughts, aspiration risk, and stomach problems.

What should patients taking Ozempic do?

If you are currently taking Ozempic, it is important to talk to your doctor about this new study and any concerns you may have. You should not stop treatment without first talking to a healthcare professional, as this may negatively affect your health.

It is important to remember that this study only suggests a possible link, and more research is needed to confirm a definitive link.

Patients should be informed about the possible risks and benefits of Ozempic and work closely with their doctors to make informed treatment decisions.

The medical community continues to study the long-term effects of semaglutide and its impact on health. Future studies are expected to provide more information about the safety and effectiveness of this drug.
