Now it’s time for his Extreme E team, ACCIONASAINZ XE Team, to take their first win of the season at the Desert X Prix II in Saudi Arabia. with Laia Sanz and Fraser McConnell putting in a flawless performance that confirms the Spanish team as contenders for the rest of the Electric Raid Championship calendar.
A title that he had already won last season and which he resisted in the last corner of the last day., which started yesterday Saturday in this first competition of 2024 with fourth place. After achieving first and third place in the qualifying rounds, the Grand Final began with an optimal start from Fraser, who took first place and never lost the lead. Laya picked up the baton in the final two laps and held off her rivals to cross the finish line first.and thus add the first victory of the year for the team.
The victory is made even sweeter because it validates the team’s potential for 2024 after losing the championship in an extreme case in 2023, and because of the hard work of mechanics to repair the Odyssey 21 following Saturday’s accident.
“I’m very happy,” says Laia Sanz. “It was a very difficult weekend because the pace is very high and everyone is improving, but I’m very happy with this first win with Fraser. Winning this race has a special flavor after we finished close to the title in the last race last year. The team did a great job improving the car in every session and in the final we felt very fast and full of energy to win. We leave Saudi Arabia with a good taste in our mouths. We know the championship will be very close, but we saw that we have the pace to win. Today we demonstrated this. “We have to keep working hard.”
The ACCIONA SAINZ XE team is currently in second place in the Championship with 39 points, just two behind the leader. In addition to the 25 points corresponding to victory in the Final, today the team also scored an additional point for winning the 2nd qualifying race.
The Extreme E Championship leaves Saudi Arabia and heads to Europe, where competition will resume on July 13 and 14 at a location yet to be determined.
