ChatGPT app available for Windows, but it’s disappointing

OpenAI has officially released the ChatGPT desktop application for Windows. This new ChatGPT app is designed for faster and more direct interactions without the need for a web browser.

The application uses the framework Electronknown for allowing you to develop desktop applications using web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS. This simplifies the integration of ChatGPT into Windows, providing a flexible and accessible user experience.

The preview version of ChatGPT for Windows is now available to mod subscribers. Plus, Enterprise, Team and Edu. Users can upload files and photos to get reviews, make business plans, or get creative ideas. Moreover, the application also supports creating images using DALL-Eanother innovative technology from OpenAI.

According to OpenAI, “This application offers Windows users a faster and more direct experience by allowing them to access ChatGPT with a simple Alt + Space command.” This feature aims to improve AI performance and accessibility, making it easier and more efficient to use ChatGPT’s capabilities.

Despite some limitations of the preview version, such as the lack of an extended speech modality, OpenAI is working on releasing a full version later this year. “We are working to offer a full range of capabilities to all users,” an OpenAI spokesperson added.

However, unfortunately, the ChatGPT Windows application is just a shell based on Electron which uses Chromium similar to a web application. As a result, it consumes a lot of resources and does not take advantage of WebView2, the technology recommended by Microsoft for web applications. This is especially painful when compared to the ChatGPT application for MacOS, which is completely native and noticeable in aesthetics and performance.

Despite these criticisms, the app has received several positive comments on social media, with users commenting on its ease of use and the ease of launching an instance using the desired shortcut.
