The Ministry of Health and the Official College of Dentists of the Region of Murcia have joined forces to raise awareness among Murcia users about how to use antibiotics correctly. Dentists and health authorities will develop strategies to standardize prescriptions as dentists are a key professional group in the fight against resistance to these drugs by promoting informed prescribing in their consultations.

Antibiotics are essential for the treatment of infectious diseases, but their inappropriate use reduces their effectiveness and leads to increased bacterial resistance and the spread of multi-resistant microorganisms.

These aspects were addressed during the “Day of Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Dentistry: How to Combat Resistance”, which was recently held at the Morales Meseguer University Hospital in Murcia, and was attended by the CEO of Hospital Assistance, Irene Marin; Director General of Planning, Pharmacy and Medical Research Jesús Cañavate and President of the Official College of Dentists of the Region of Murcia Pedro Caballero.

To improve the use of antibacterial agents and raise awareness of their correct use, the region’s government is joining in on the European Day for the Wise Use of Antibiotics, which is celebrated this Monday, 18 November. The slogan of the campaign to disseminate the National Plan to Combat Antibiotic Resistance in 2024 is: “It is their job to protect antibiotics, and yours to use them correctly.”

The emergence and spread of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria represents one of the most serious threats to public health, causing 30,000 deaths per year in Europe, and in Spain, according to the Minimum Basic Data Registry, about 3,000 deaths are recorded annually. same reason. Salud develops strategies for the appropriate use of these drugs in all areas, including hospital and community care.
