Donors pledge hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid to Syria – DW – 05/28/2024

The international community pledged this Monday (05/27/2024) 7,500 million euros (about 6,906 million dollars) in aid to people affected by more than thirteen years of war in Syria, refugees and host communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

“At the 2024 Syria Conference, the international community demonstrated again that the people in Syria, Syrian refugees and their host communities, have not been forgotten,” European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Janez Lenarcic said on the social network X.

“In support, we have mobilised a total of 7.5 billion euros (5 billion in grants and 2.5 billion in loans),” the Commissioner said at the end of the eighth international donor conference for Syria organised by the European Union, bringing together a number of States, including Syria’s neighbours, and international organisations such as the United Nations.

The global amount includes 5.4 million euros committed by Spain for this year, as well as 2,120 million euros that the EU will distribute this year and next.

Specifically, the EU will allocate €560 million in 2024 and the same amount in 2025 to support populations inside Syria and vulnerable Syrian refugees and host communities in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, as well as allocating €1 billion this year to refugees and host communities in Turkey.
