(CNN)- Eight people were killed and 17 others were injured in a knife attack on a university campus in the eastern Chinese city of Yixing on Saturday, police said.

“On November 16, 2024, at approximately 6:30 pm, a stabbing incident occurred at Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing city, killing eight people and injuring 17 others. The suspect was arrested at the scene. According to a police statement.

The statement said the suspect was a recent graduate and was motivated by “failing exams, not receiving a graduation certificate, and being dissatisfied with internship compensation.” Investigation is ongoing.

The attack is the latest mass casualty incident in China.

In September, three people were killed and 15 others were injured in a knife attack at a suburban supermarket in Shanghai.

Also in September, a bus crashed into a crowd of students and parents outside a school in Tai’an city, Shandong province, killing 11 and injuring 13 others, with Chinese officials not disclosing whether it was Was it accidental or intentional.
