Price of electricity on the regulated market

The price of PVPC electricity today, tomorrow and any other day is set by the daily electricity market.

It is called pool (which in Spanish can mean either “pool” or “group” or “storage”), as power generating companies, through their respective generating plants (nuclear, hydro, renewable, combined cycle, etc.) run each of their next day offers.

With such supply, demand is satisfied (based on a series of estimates) at a market price called the marginal price.

Finally, this day-to-day activity is called “matching” supply and demand, although in electrical engineering jargon it is also known as “daily dispatching.” This is an auction conducted by the market operator, which in Spain is the company OMIE. This is an hourly discrimination rate and its price depends on market volatility.

Price of electricity on the free market

Unlike the previous one, the price of electricity on the free market is set by marketers themselves, who usually offer the opportunity to combine gas and electricity supplies in one company. Usually the price is fixed, which gives the user more confidence in how much they are going to pay.

On the other hand, being in liberalized electricity market This requires the consumer to pay more attention to the contract rate as well as price revisions. “There are good opportunities for savings, but there is also a risk of paying much more,” warns the OCU.
