Endometriosis is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Women with endometriosis have a 20% higher risk of serious cardiac events compared to women without endometriosis, according to research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress ESC 2024 in London.

For decades, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been considered a male disease and risk factors have been considered from a male perspective, for example by including erectile dysfunction in CVD risk assessment guidelines. However, this explains why “one in three women die from cardiovascular disease and one in ten women suffers from endometriosis,” explains lead author Eva Havers-Borgersen from Rigshospitalet University Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Our findings, she adds, “suggest that it may be time to routinely consider cardiovascular disease risk in women with endometriosis.”

The study used Danish national registers of all women diagnosed with endometriosis between 1977 and 2021. They were matched with women from the original population without endometriosis in a ratio of 1:4 depending on year of birth.

The primary endpoint was a composite of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke.

A total of 6 were included in the analysis.0.508 women with endometriosis and 242,032 controls (mean age 37.3 years), who were followed for an average of 16 years and a maximum of 45 years.

Every third woman dies from cardiovascular disease, and every tenth woman suffers from endometriosis.

Women with endometriosis had approximately 20% higher risk of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke compared with women without endometriosis.

Growing evidence suggests that there is a close link between endometriosis and the cardiovascular system and that they may share common disease transmission pathways.

According to Havers-Borgersen, “although the absolute differences were small, the relative differences were 20%, and given the high prevalence of endometriosis, these results provide further evidence that female-specific risk factors and cardiovascular disease in women require greater attention.”

Therefore he concludes: “We suggest that women with endometriosis undergo cardiovascular risk assessment and now is the time to identify woman-specific risk factors. (such as endometriosis, as well as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia) are taken into account in cardiovascular risk prediction models. “Further studies are needed to confirm our findings and integrate these factors into effective risk prediction models.”
