Euro arbitration revolution will put an end to protests
Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s chief referee, explained the revolutionary measure that referees will implement during the European Cup, which will see only the captain have the right to appeal to the referee in the event of a controversial decision. The rest, if they do this, will be reprimanded. “We are not doing this for the referees, we are doing this for football. For the future. For young people and those who want to be judges,” he said.
Rosetti explained what the procedure would be: “We want to explain our decisions, but it is impossible to address eleven players. We will only do this with the captain. The fourth referee will do the same with the coach. We are talking about important situations, obviously not all of them. We don’t need players, just a captain. The rest will be reprimanded. This already happened recently in the Euro finals: Vinčić received two yellow cards from Dortmund for protesting, Kovac received a yellow card from each Europa League team, and Arthur Dias received another yellow card in the Conference. “We’re at that level of application.”
He also indicated what would happen if the goalkeeper became the captain: “If the coach is the captain, the team will say before the match which player will represent the captain when he is not around. At the Euro there are two teams whose captain is a goalkeeper: Italy and Slovenia.”
Rosetti also reminded about the usual use of VAR, about hands and how players should act in a serious foul game: “You must have zero tolerance when there is risk. You must protect the player. Playing with the ball is not enough in the face of difficult tackles.”
