Eurocup referees will only give explanations to captains

UEFA wants to reduce the number of protests and avoid the bad image that many matches create regarding the treatment of referees and have decided that they will Only the captains of each team may approach the judges. This was officially explained by the head of the refereeing service of the European football organization, Italian Roberto Rosetti.

Key decisions will only be explained to the captain and Any other player who approaches the referee and shows any signs of disrespect or disagreement will be warned with a yellow card.. It will be the captain’s responsibility to ensure this. If the captain is a goalkeeper, then it will be necessary to select a field player who will address the referee during games.

This is a letter written by the person responsible for refereeing the 24 Eurocup teams:

“Being a referee in modern football is very difficult. The center referee makes between 200 and 250 decisions per match (that is, one every 22 seconds) in difficult and sometimes controversial situations, under enormous pressure. each of them is studied and observed from different points of view by both amateurs and experts.

We need referees with strong personalities who make decisions (which may sometimes be unpopular) on the field, but at the same time we want them to be more open and explain what led to certain decisions. They get a lot of information from video refereeing (VAR) and we are willing to talk and share details with players and coaches to help them understand how the decision was made.

The issue of player and coach behavior has become an increasingly important topic in football: at the EURO 2024 finalists’ seminar in April, coaches agreed to work to ensure fair play, and at a recent meeting of the UEFA Football Council it was one of the main topics. in Nyon. Both coaches and players strongly welcomed and supported our new approach as a common goal for the well-being of the game.

The referee can’t explain a decision when you’re being chased by up to 22 players. This can cause a breakdown in communication and a beautiful game can very quickly turn ugly, which everyone agrees is bad for the image of football.

Of course, some decisions will always be discussed. However, in an attempt to improve the status quo, UEFA wants referees to explain their decisions in more detail to all teams taking part in the next EURO 2024 tournament.

How do we do this? The idea is simple: we ask all teams to ensure that their captain is the only player who speaks to the referee. We ask captains to ensure that their teammates do not encroach or surround the referee, allowing for direct conversation so that the decision can be made in a timely and respectful manner.

It is important to note that we want only the team captain who wishes to discuss a decision to have the opportunity to approach the referee. It is the captain’s responsibility to ensure that his teammates respect the referee. Keep your distance and don’t surround him. Any teammate who ignores his role as captain and/or approaches the referee, showing any signs of disrespect or disagreement, will be cautioned with a yellow card. Obviously, If the captain is a goalkeeper, it will be necessary to designate a field player who can fill this role in the event of an incident at the opposite end of the field.

Officials will be encouraged to be open in conversations with captains to create a healthy atmosphere between all parties. This will allow them to gain a lot of trust in the players and demonstrate the type of leadership required of today’s referees in action. The UEFA refereeing team and, if possible, the tournament referee will meet with each of the 24 teams to discuss this in more detail and share this information with the players.

Adopting this approach and empowering referees will result in an increase in the already very high quality of refereeing at our competitions and in higher quality matches that players and fans will be able to enjoy during the tournament. If we can create a constructive dialogue between referees and team captains, it will benefit everyone and we will leave a positive legacy for the future of the great game. The game we all love.
