Exercises that will help your mental health
Mental health is a state of well-being that allows people to cope with stressful moments in life, develop all their skills, and be able to study and work normally. It is a fundamental part of health and well-being that supports our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, form relationships and shape the world in which we live. Therefore, it is necessary that we engage in physical activity that stimulates the release of various hormones that help our minds heal.
In turn, regular and adequate physical activity, including any body movement that requires energy, can reduce the risk of many non-communicable diseases and disorders such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and colon cancer, and depression .
1. There is a connection between physical activity and mental health.
By exercising, we stimulate the production of endorphins in our brain, which are released during and after exercise and cause a greater state of happiness and emotional well-being.
2. How much exercise should we do to improve our mental health?
The answer will certainly depend on age, although it actually isn’t as much as you might think. You don’t have to lock yourself in the gym for hours or spend all day on the treadmill. All the physical and mental health benefits can be achieved with 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week.
Alternatively, this can be spread out over two 15-minute workouts or three 10-minute workouts. Even a few minutes of physical activity is better than nothing. You can start with sessions lasting five to 10 minutes and gradually increase them. The more exercise you do, the more energy you’ll have, so you’ll eventually feel ready for more. The key is to commit to doing some physical activity most of the day.
3. Walk
To perform this exercise, all you need is a good pair of tennis shoes and some great company. You can do this with a friend or family member, and it’s perfect for bonding while activating your body at the same time.
4. Swim
An ideal exercise for those who love water. This is one of the most complete physical activities. It can be combined with other exercises, such as aerobics in the same pool, which will help strengthen the muscles.
5. Bicycle
This can be done on a preferred route and with a group of people to keep you motivated. If this is not possible, the best option for moving your body without leaving your home is an exercise bike.
6. Yoga
The best thing about this practice is that you do not need to be an expert to practice it as it has multiple levels of difficulty. You can start with the basics: simple but very comprehensive stretches and movements that are ideal for strengthening your muscles and clearing your mind.
7. Dance
Dancing is a very fulfilling activity. This can be done to the rhythm of music and in the good company of friends, and this will be enough to stay in shape. Plus, it’s ideal to do it as a couple: here you’re doing double duty: doing exercises to maintain good mental and physical health and at the same time having quality time with your partner.
