The “Extremadura Liver Week” will begin this coming Monday, the 29th, in Badajoz, although hepatology specialists will also take part in various events that will be organized in Cáceres, Mérida or Placencia and Badajoz.

Liver disease is among the ten leading causes of death worldwide, and the prevalence of liver disease has been increasing over the past two decades, mainly due to risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.


This, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy habits, leads to an increased prevalence of chronic liver diseases such as metabolic liver steatosis (MEH) or fatty liver, alcohol-related liver disease and viral hepatitis, and liver cancer (hepatocarcinoma). ). and cholangiocarcinoma).

According to Isidoro Narváez, head of the digestive system service of the department of hepatology and liver transplantation of the University Hospital Complex of Badajoz and coordinator of the “Liver Disease Week in Extremadura”, awareness seems to be the “key” to taking effective preventive measures, such as maintaining a healthy weight, controlling alcohol consumption and maintaining hygiene habits.

Therefore, in order to raise public awareness of the importance of liver diseases in the context of public health and the need for prevention and early detection, the Spanish Association for the Study of the Liver (AEEH), under the auspices of the Biopharmaceutical Company AbbVie, is organizing a “Liver Disease Week in Extremadura” from January 29 to February 1.

This week’s program of events will begin in Badajoz with the official opening of the University Hospital of Badajoz and the holding of an interdisciplinary round table on the comprehensive treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, which is the most common type of liver cancer, the Association said. for the study of the liver.
